What do you think of my new headshots?

(and let's get a set for you while we're at it!)

This morning on LinkedIn and Tiktok, I hinted at a cool giveaway in this week’s newsletter - and it’s with our sponsor, Secta Labs! Secta has offered a 25% discount to my community.

But we also have another awesome giveaway and it’s ONLY available to my newsletter community as a thank you for your support - Secta will be offering headshots to 50 people impacted by layoffs for just $5. To sign-up, you’ll need to fill out this form - please note that we will ONLY be able to offer this to the first 50 sign-ups!

We all want great headshots, but it’s not in the budget for so many of us to spend hundreds on a photoshoot. Huge shout out to Secta for offering this so that even if funds are tight, hopefully more people can get their new headshots!

P.S. Once you get your headshots PLEASE tag me when you post them, especially if you get any goofy ones (scroll to the bottom of this newsletter for one that made me laugh!)

Can social media get you hired?

Social media is here to stay and it CAN accelerate your job search! I’ve had multiple recruiters contact me about opportunities based on things I’ve posted on social media!

Here are a few things to consider when crafting content:

  1. You NEED to have a strong LinkedIn profile - if you post something interesting, potential employers will click on your profile - you need to ensure that your profile quickly communicates who you are and what you do! Not sure where to start? I’ve got a free guide you can download here.

  2. Create content that helps illuminate your expertise and perspective. Share your opinions about your field and professions. This helps because it will both attract people (future colleagues!) in your field to your profile, and help you stand out if recruiters stumble upon your profile while sourcing.

  3. Engage with content from people at your target company, in your target fields, etc. This will help make you familiar to them. Consider leaving a question which will invite them to respond to you and could open the door to continued networking.

And a few things to look out for:

  1. Be wary of hot takes, political content, etc. Now, I freely post this kind of stuff. But I’m also happily employed so I’m not trying to attract employers and don’t mind turning off people who may not like my content. If I were aggressively hunting for a job, I would keep things more neutral to prevent scaring off a more conservative employer. It’s also fine to decide that you’re not interested in employers who aren’t OK with it. So mostly, I’m just saying to be aware that it COULD impact your search.

  2. I don’t personally check any other social media platforms when considering a candidate. But I’ve heard of people who do. If you do post content that may be off-putting on other platforms, I would probably have those locked down for the same reason.

  3. Remember that your comments are also visible if people follow you…so same advice as above…just be aware and make sure you’re comfortable with your future employer seeing anything you share - even if it’s a comment on someone else’s post.

And remember that while I focus a lot on LinkedIn, ANY platform can support your search. You can create career content and use these strategies on any platform you like (TikTok is great for this!)

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋

Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.

Advice for a Stay at home mom returning to the workforce after over a decade of being out of the workforce. No College/university degree, but have taken some college courses over the years. Background in admin/customer service, insurance, medical underwriting and banking. How do you address the gap on your resume and what do recruiters think of such work stop gaps? Looking for help, please. Thank you :)

I know this is such a relatable question for many readers! Here are some ideas:

  1. I would list your time parenting on your resume, and note any skills/experiences in that time. For example, if you volunteered, served on the PTA, coached softball, etc. include those experiences.

  2. Some bigger companies have programs specifically designed for those re-entering the workforce. Look in to returnships (like internships but for those reentering the workforce) - Path Forward and Women Back to Work are two examples!

  3. Leverage your networks! Let people from previous workplaces know you’re looking to re-enter the workforce as well as those who you’ve collaborated with even if informally over the last 10 years. They may be able to offer referrals and introductions!

  4. Consider more early career opportunities. It may be easier to get your foot in the door by going for more entry level roles. Given your experience, you can likely grow more quickly, and once you have a job, it’s easier to search since you can be pickier.

And regarding your degree status, I would personally just list where you took the courses and the coursework (like University of Nebraska, Business Administration) but not list a degree. More and more companies are moving away from requiring degrees anyway but that way, you get credit for the coursework and it’s on the company to verify completion if it’s a requirement for them.

Hope this gives you some ideas to get started - I know it can be tough to re-enter the workforce but there are lots of supports out there too!

A jobseeker you need to hire: Meet Nishtha Arora!
I am a passionate traveler who also practices meditation. I completed my engineering degree at a top-tier college in Asia and have worked in startups and public companies for over 11 years.
My expertise lies in product management, particularly in building products from scratch and creating strategies that benefit users and drive business outcomes. I have mentored teams of various sizes and hired and developed cross-functional global teams. I am proud of my accomplishments, such as successfully shifting a learning and test prep product in a struggling market to profitability in just six months, creating a top 5 -flight booking product in the Middle East, and growing a global hospitality aggregator's revenue from zero to $50 million in the Americas and Europe.
Recently, I served as the Director of Products for India's largest publicly traded travel marketplace, leading their enterprise product with engineering, design, and business teams. I am passionate about building products that enhance users' lifestyles, whether it's through influencer-led learning, creating better travel experiences, or helping users find products online that fit their needs. I am looking for my next challenge to lead a portfolio of products that align with my passions.
Think you might have a role that’s a good fit for Yasha, or be able to help make a connection? Add her on LinkedIn, or email her, and let’s get Nishtha hired!
