Are we seeing a JOLT in the market?!
Plus several awesome resources!
Three Things to Check Out!
I shared some free resources for jobseekers over the weekend and wanted to highlight them here as well. If you’re struggling with transportation, clothing, or if you have other challenges impacting your search, this post may be helpful!
I have not personally used or vetted Hired, and have no relationship with them, but a few recruiter friends mentioned using it. It’s a platform for hiring teams to source candidates, and is free to make a profile.
And just for fun, if you haven’t already checked out this bop, you should!
What does the JOLTS report tell us about the market? 📈
The good: We continue to have historically low rates of unemployment, and 1.3 job openings for every available worker.
The bad: But unfortunately, there’s just a misalignment between the kind of jobs and compensation the workforce needs (and deserves given their skillset and the cost of living!) and what’s available on the market.
The ugly: Job openings declined 6.6% to 8.7% - and this is consistently worse than predictions. It’s the lowest number since March 2021, and significantly below the Dow Jones prediction of 9.4 million jobs.
You can check out more insights on the report here.
But there ARE places where employees still have the upper hand
It can certainly feel discouraging to see the market continue to feel stagnant. But the reality is there ARE a lot of jobs out there, they just may not be the top choice jobs, and in some cases, there may be gaps in skill sets.
This article from Axios highlighted industries where employers are desperate to expand their workforce. This may give jobseekers leverage around work conditions, compensation, etc. These are also industries that may be more open to career changers, and offer more on the job training.

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.
I am someone who has led a smattering of various recruitment and talent acquisition projects and experiences throughout my career, and I have been working on pivoting my career more deliberately in that direction by working as a freelance talent acquisition contractor for about 18 months now. Ultimately, my goal is to land in a full-time talent acquisition or executive recruiter role. Aside from accumulating experiences as a contractor, are there courses, skill-building resources, and/or certification programs you'd recommend to help strengthen my candidacy in this field? Thank you!
This is definitely a tough time to move into TA work because the market is so saturated with people who have significant experience working in TA, and often, they may have the edge in landing an offer.
The AIRS certification is a popular one that you might consider. Agencies may also be a better bet right now in terms of securing a role. But I think the journey may be a longer one in this market unfortunately.
I have to work remote due to a disability. How do I communicate this when there are so few remote roles?
This is a really tough situation because unfortunately, companies don’t consider need when considering candidates so even if you need remote work in order to work at all, they may hire someone else.
I would personally apply to hybrid roles. This tells you the job can be done remotely. And then at the offer stage, ask to talk to HR about accommodations and share your documentation. As long as the accommodations don’t cause undue hardship, the company generally needs to meet it. Now they may come up with some other solutions to meet your needs. But if the job CAN be done remotely, then there’s a decent chance they’ll figure out an accommodation.
I would also of course continue to prioritize remote roles, but I realize those are so tough to find which is why I think adding in hybrid/on site and then requesting an accommodation could help unlock opportunities.
