We're ready for take-off!

Welcome on Board! 👩‍✈️

If you're receiving the LinkedIn version, this may look like a duplicate - I'm planning to move to Beehiv in April - as an early subscriber, you're getting my test versions, and each one will include an extra bonus - check the section at the end to find it!!

After 14 months of creating content on LinkedIn, I realized I wanted another avenue to share thoughts and ideas - one without character limits and algorithms that determine who sees what.

My goal with this newsletter is to:

  1. Provide actionable tips and resources to support your job search.

  2. Share jobs openings with companies that I can confidently recommend (and make connections where I can!)

  3. Help at least 1 person land a new job every week!

P.S. Shoutout to my follower, Karey Kenst, for coming up with the title for this newsletter! There were so many amazing suggestions, but as someone who loves travel, having the runway (🤣) to make travel puns tipped the scales towards "Landed!

Ready for Take-off! 🛫

The reality is that for every job posted, most companies are getting 100+ applicants. If they are a well known company or it's a really popular job title, that number is more like 1000+. So many, MANY very qualified candidates end up not even getting an interview for these roles.

Here are a few things that most applicants don't do that could help, ESPECIALLY if you're a less traditional candidate (like pivoting careers) where your resume alone may not capture the recruiter's attention.

  1. After you apply, message a few people at the company (target the person you think might be the hiring manager or recruiter, or any connections at the company), letting them know you've applied and expressing excitement about hearing back. Even if they don't respond, this increases the chances of them looking up your application and reviewing it early.

  2. After you apply (or in the application if there's a space to add something extra), share a work product, portfolio, customer reviews, etc. to show more of what you bring to the table. If you already have something to share, it's actually not a ton of effort. And I can count on one hand how many people have done this. It's definitely a way to stand out!

  3. And finally, I have mixed feelings here but I've seen multiple people recommend video intros where someone shares a bit more about their background and interest (think: video cover letter) as a way for candidates to stand out. I say mixed feelings because it's a big extra step to take and I don't think people should have to do things like this, however, I've NEVER gotten one of these so it's a way to differentiate yourself. So it could be a thing to try that pretty much no one is doing.

Have you tried out any of these strategies or is there one you're excited to try? Let me know, I'd love to hear from you!
