The September Surge is Coming!!! (MAYBE!)
You’ve probably heard the buzz around the “September Surge”, that magical time in the fall when companies are supposedly going to ramp up hiring.
Do I think this is coming? Not really if I’m being honest.
Do I think we’ll likely see some uptick? I do! I’d expect some folks have held off through the summer and should be posting jobs now that vacations are over and such. Companies often see upticks in attrition as well since folks may have held out so they could take their PTO during the summer. So we will likely see more roles though I don’t think it will be a huge surge.
So what should I do?
Make sure that you’ve got a resume ready to go.

Strong headline that clearly communicates what you’re looking for, and enough info on employers/titles that a recruiter can find what they need quickly if they come across your profile.Activate your network.
Let folks know what you’re looking for. Make sure your friends know job titles, industry, and maybe even have a little paragraph they can share about you when making referrals. That way, if their employer opens something that’s a good match, they’ll think of you first!
And as always, I think my advice stands about only applying to jobs you’re a really good fit for. I loved this tip from Maddie Machado about leveraging ChatGPT to identify if you’re really going to be a top match. You’re better off putting out 20 stellar apps than 200 weaker ones.

I had 3 short jobs during and post Covid. All due to clients leaving and teams being dissolved (digital marketing field). I've explained this in every cover letter I send out. I still get feedback that it's due to job hopping that employers won't talk to me. What else can I do? It's so frustrating. I've been at my current job over 2 years and prior to Covid was at my job 4 years.
Ugh, I have some choice words for those employers! For what it’s worth, you are probably dodging some bullets with these companies if they think that way, especially given your consistent employment that shows that this isn’t a theme in your work.
But a few ideas:
You might frame these jobs as smaller contract jobs. For that period, you could list “Digital Marketing Consulting” as a longer job (like 2020-2022) and then just list those 3 underneath like projects. You can still include the company and such, but that might help minimize the appearance of job hopping.
Avoid explaining them too much. I’ve seen some folks that go overboard talking about issues, and that could raise flags. For example they might wonder if you did something that caused those clients to be dissatisfied. Framing them as projects within a larger “job” of digital marketing might minimize the need to explain those any way. But it’s possible you’re detracting from all your great experiences but bringing too much attention to the period during the pandemic.
Hopefully those tips help a bit, but also hopeful you’re able to find an employer who doesn’t think this way. Any decent recruiting team knows the impact of the pandemic on the workplace so to hold it against jobseekers doesn’t make much sense at all!
