Q3 is here, and hiring is picking up!!

Here's what you should be asking companies!

Let’s kick things off with a joke that I wish wasn’t so real…we love remote work over here!

Should you work at a company shortly after layoffs?

This week, I wanted to talk about interviewing after a company has done layoffs. We’re at the point where some companies that conducted layoffs 6-12 months ago are ramping up hiring again.

If you’re interviewing, here’s a list of questions/considerations that would be top of mind for me to help me determine if I would consider an opportunity with a company shortly after layoffs.

For me, a company going through a layoff isn’t a dealbreaker or even a major consideration - they are just super common at this point. However, how they treat their employees and take care of them IS a dealbreaker.

So the questions I suggest asking are those that will give you insight into these areas, as well as how the business as evolved post-layoff.

Hope this is helpful resource!

👀 Here’s some interesting stuff in my world! 👀

I just did a podcast with the founder of Teal, David Fano! You can check it out here.

I made a couple of TikToks with good advice this week! This one has a couple of quick examples/tips for your resume/networking. And this one has 3 easy tips to help you up your interviewing game!

And finally, I’ve shared this before but I’ll share it again - content creation WILL accelerate your job search. Here’s proof.

Teal is one of my favorite products for jobseekers!

Many of their features are completely free, and I think this is a tool every jobseeker should have in their toolkit. Sign up here!

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋

Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.

I abandoned my quest for a degree many years ago as my career experience and talent outpaced the educational system (early 2000’s). I am now in a position, with more than twenty years of experience, competing against bachelor and master degree recipients as I search for my next role. I am undecided if I should pursue an associates (just to have a degree on the books whilst taking on student loan debt) or move towards my PMP relying solely on my extensive years of experience in project management, customer relations, finance, etc. What would you recommend in this scenario?

It sounds like you’ve built a great career without a degree!

Do the jobs you’re interested in require those degrees? If not, it may not pay off as much as a certification that’s really relevant to your work.

If you attended school even for just a quarter, I would include that on your resume - no need to put a degree status or years attended.

I personally don’t believe that most roles should require a degree, and I think the world is moving more and more in that direction as well though change will take time. But if you’ve proven yourself without a degree, then I think most companies will see that!

Side note: if it comes up as a requirement, consider discussing proactively whether there are options, for example completing your degree while in the role. I know this works because:
1. I’ve made several hires at an organization that had degree requirements who didn’t have degrees. In both cases, the hiring managers ultimately agreed as long as the new hire agreed to complete their degree within a few years.
2. My mom got hired the same way a few years ago - and once she was in the role, she was able to advocate to HR to get this requirement lifted by pointing out that there was no meaningful difference in performance.
