People are getting hired!

And today, I'm sharing resources and lesson's learned from those folks!

Our favorite AI headshot company, Secta, is offering 20% off to subscribers of Landed! After trying many services, this one is hands down my favorite - give it a try and tag me when you share your headshots!! You can see a few examples from another one of our community members here.

Y’all the world is really messy and hard right now.

But I’m not going to be talking about that in this issue. That’s not to minimize what many folks may be feeling - whether it’s about what’s happening in the world, your job search, or whatever else is feeling tough, so I just wanted to acknowledge that.

Cool resources from YOU!

One of our community members, Todd Zandrowicz, shared a few resources that helped him in his own job search last year. And y’all I kid you not, right now as I was writing this newsletter, I checked LinkedIn and saw I was tagged in a post - and it’s featuring the resources I’m about to share. So there’s your proof of impact!

One is his pre-interview emails. Any time he landed an interview, he sent this ahead of the interview.

What I like: y’all people NEVER do this…like I’ve gotten maybe 5 messages like this in my career. This is an AWESOME way to differentiate yourself from the crown, show that you go above and beyond, provide meaningful information about what you bring to a company that may or may not come out in the interview, and potentially guide the direction of the interview as this gives your interviewer things to ask about.

What I might tweak: different folks have different levels of comfort with sharing about themselves. We know that your marital status, kids, illness/disability, etc. can be held against folks. I love the info he shared and think it’s a great way to just personalize yourself to your interviewer, but share whatever you are comfortable sharing and don’t feel pressured to share the same types of information.
I would also add in a few big wins/career highlights - you can’t count on every interviewer digging into your resume!

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Santa Todd also shared this list of questions he likes to ask, differentiated by audience and topic! I love that he included questions about culture as well since I know so many folks want to ensure their next employer is a good fit.

Of course you want to differentiate your questions based on the role/company as well as things you learn in your interview, but this is a fantastic list.

P.S. I love it when y’all share what’s working with me - don’t hesitate to share resources that are useful and I will include them here!

People are getting hired!

Kristi Kennebrew (who also has a bunch of social media as “Get Me Hired Kristi!) and found herself laid off from Microsoft a few months back. Well last month she announced her new role at Salesforce!
Kristi shared the steps she took in this video! It’s all the stuff I talk about - networking, asking for referrals, keeping up with your target companies, etc.

Last month, I shared Meghan Christensen’s post in the jobseekers who need support portion of this newsletter. And this week, she posted that she’s starting a new job!
Couple of things I noticed her doing: she shared open jobs she saw around her regularly, along with noting that she’s Open to Work. That’s a great way to continually bring attention to your own search, and garner good will from those around you - people want to help people who have helped them! She also highlighted recommendations from hiring managers on her profile. These are great ways to stand out in a saturated field.

Another person whose Open to Work I shared a recently - Ashley Blom. Fun fact: Ashley was one of my first friends when I moved to Austin! And she’s gone through multiple layoffs in the last few years…and one thing that’s amazed me is how quickly she lands new jobs. She just posted her new job alert! She also had this super viral post with her stats on her job search.
During her search, I noticed that Ashley shared updates that showed her passion and approach to the work and was definitely more active on LinkedIn! And a recruiter actually reached out to HER about the opening - which is a great reminder that even in a tough market, recruiters WILL reach out, and one of the ways to maximize your chances of hearing from them is to build out your profile and be active on LinkedIn.

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋

Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.

Bonnie, what kind of puppy should I get?

Believe it or not, I get this question ALL THE TIME. Mostly from myself. But how convenient that someone who definitely wasn’t me asked this important question.

These would be pretty fun:

I've got a diverse background in tech startups, wearing many hats from customer support to operations and leadership roles. Despite strong metrics and accomplishments, I'm struggling to land interviews for roles I'm qualified for. My key question: How can someone with a non-linear career path like mine effectively communicate their skills and adaptability to recruiters, LinkedIn, and on resumes without overwhelming with details? Also dealing with the added layer of being "high functioning Autistic," which I prefer to keep private.

Lots of important questions here. Here are a few thoughts!

  1. You might consider a couple of different resumes, one for each job family that interests you - and tailor what you share about each previous role accordingly - this could even mean tweaking the title to align it a bit more if you had a more general role. That way, your path looks a bit more linear and makes sense to that recruiter that’s spending 10 seconds skimming your resume.

  2. Some companies actively seek generalists or people who can wear many hats. Start-ups and non-profits both love to have folks who are versatile given that either resources or scale make it hard to hire people who are experts.

  3. Networking is your friend in any case, but it can definitely be helpful to send out emails/DMs that outline why you’re applying for the job you’re applying for to help it “make sense” to an outside observer.

And re: the layer of being Autistic, I would probably leave this information out as it’s not really relevant and it sounds like you don’t want to share it. Instead you can lean on the strengths and talents that you have which may happen to be traits of your Autism - there’s no reason for a hiring team to know that however!
