In the News
Apparently people are “job hugging” now - the new phrase for when people are holding on to their current job - even if it’s not fully meeting their needs. This is reflected in lower quit rates and less job mobility.
Jerome Powell says these are the signals he’s watching to continue to assess the strength of the job market.
And for a second workplace trend of the week, how about “the great flattening” where employers are creating flatter structures, cutting out middle managers. This often impacts more junior employees as well because with less management capacity, managers typically hire more senior team members who don’t require as much support.
🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
My company is doing quiet layoffs and I got put on a PIP. I think they just want to fire us to avoid severance. Any advice?
Unfortunately this can be really tough to navigate. Does the PIP seem like something you can complete successfully? If so, I’d focus on proving myself.
But if you feel like the outcome will be the same no matter what (which is what I assume with the context of “quiet layoffs”), I would probably:
Protect yourself as much as possible.
Document everything so you’re protected if you need to file unemployment or want to take legal action.Do the bare minimum.
Meet the deadlines and requirements on paper, but don’t over-invest to prove yourself if there’s no point. But by staying professional and meeting the basic requirements, you’re better positioned to make a case for severance.Plan for the future
Work on your budget so you can save up a bit. Understand unemployment benefits in your area. Figure out a side hustle. Start your job search.
