Open for tips from a recently hired jobseeker!
Five Fast Tips
I saw this great post from someone about what helped candidates stand out when she received 800 APPLICATIONS IN 24 HOURS!
Five days left for 20% off for headshots with Secta AI (I do receive a small kickback here!)
Liz Acosta wrote an article about what it’s like to work with her! Thought this was a super creative approach, and is something you can share over and over again (for example, as a link in comments on future posts or when DM'ing hiring managers!
This post has some great tips for a quick job search (the poster is clearly selling services too - I don’t know her at all so please don’t take the sharing of this post as an endorsement of her coaching, however, I thought the tips might help some folks!)
I shared some resources for neurodivergent jobseekers here.
Get those networks working for you!
Ashleigh Bergh Duggan contributed to our issue today! She was affected by layoffs, and is now happily in a new role as a User Success Manager (CSM) with Lavender! Read how she leveraged her community in her search!
About 3 months into my job search, I was at an incredibly low point - I was exhausted, I was tired of applying for jobs and hearing nothing back, and I felt like no matter what I did, I was just treading water.
I connected with someone who said something to me that I will never forget, and that honestly changed how I approached my job search. She said, “The only person who has your job search top of mind 24/7… is you.”
That isn’t to say that partners or friends or family aren’t thinking of you or wanting to be helpful - it just means that your job search isn’t the most important thing to them - at least not ALL of the time. And unless its someone you talk to daily, it's highly unlikely that they’re aware you’re still looking.
So, with that frame in mind, I revisited what I call my sparkle signal (my version of the bat signal), and wrote a post with this template as my guide:
Clear expectations with a catchy title: what is this post about? In my case, I made it VERY clear and noted it was going to be an ask for help!
Background context: how long I’d been unemployed and how it felt. Maybe one or two notes about my real-life experience.
A TL;DR on what I do: I isolated this into a few specific categories - how long I’ve been a working professional, and generally, what all of my roles had in common, and 2-3 role areas where I could quantify specific achievements.
What I was looking for in terms of role location and type: the where and the how. part-time, full-time, remote, specific cities, etc.
Very, very clear calls to action: that weren’t just tied to whether or not someone had an opening for me.
Offering support for others. Reading resumes, making connections - whatever I could do for someone else!
I posted this to Facebook to share with my community which doesn’t always live on LinkedIn. The results?
103 people reacted to my post
74 people commented on it
22 people SHARED IT
From that, I made 20 new LinkedIn connections; 4 introductions via Facebook messenger; 2 interviews; and 1 offer for freelance work.
It reminded me that people WANT to help - they just need to know what you need and how they can help. If they can’t support you in the ways you’ve asked, they’ll scroll on by.
If you ever have thoughts or tips you want to contribute, let me know - I’m happy to share this platform with you!

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.
I know that getting a referral is the way to get noticed today but what do you do when your network is just small? I feel like I've tapped out on personal outreach. Names and contact info for recruiters and hiring managers at companies aren't usually public knowledge. Where do I go from here?
I know this is so relatable to so many jobseekers! There are no quick fixes but your best bet is to grow your network. Here are a few steps you can take:
Follow, comment, and send connection requests to recruiters and hiring managers! I know I start to notice the people who comment on my posts and then am more likely to connect with them live. It won’t work for everyone, but set a goal of leaving 10 comments a day or spending 30 minutes engaging with people at companies you’re interested in, and you’ll start to see your network grow.
Use the approach for searching for posts about jobs vs the jobs section - this will help you figure out what recruiter or hiring manager you should be contacting.
Post about your search! Share how things are going or thoughts on your industry. This is a great way to connect with people in your industry, and some of those may be able to make referrals!
Finally, remember that referrals are one way to get noticed but most hires are still made through directly applying for roles. So apply, and then DM a few people with relevant titles (recruiters, and people in the department you’re applying to) about your app - most won’t respond, but some will and that can still help you in your search!
