Was that JOLTS report finally some good news?!
Plus navigating childcare disruptions, promotions, and more!
Quick Resources!
With about 2k new subscribers in the last month, I want to reshare a couple of hot resources!
You can download a list of VC job boards here. I love this resource because it can help you find companies you may be unfamiliar with, but with VC-funding, they are likely to be stable! And many of these companies are small and don’t post on traditional job boards.
Looking for remote jobs? I shared a much longer list a few weeks back and these were the top 3 most clicked on - check them out!!
Flex Jobs (hand-screened so you’re not dealing with fake remote jobs!)
Remote Source (the largest collection of US-based jobs!) - you can also subscribe to their newsletter here.
Otta (not exclusively remote, but many remote options, and one of the better job boards I’ve found!)
An increase in job openings?!
If you run in the same circles that I do, then you’ve already read the JOLTS report. If you don’t, then no worries, I read it so you don’t have to!
First, the seemingly good news:
The report exceeded expectations with 9.6M openings - a 690k increase from July! So that might imply more hiring happening…
That said:
The hiring rate stayed about the same.
We continue to average about 150k jobs added to payrolls each month (that’s about half of what we saw in the first quarter of 2023).
You can see where the greatest increases have been - financial, professional services, manufacturing, and government. Some fields (like information/tech are down from July).
So in the grand scheme of things, you’re probably not going to notice a huge change in available jobs.
On the upside, I’ve started seeing more recruiter hiring! I’ve had a few companies reach out to me with opportunities (this had really slowed down most of 2023!), and companies who did layoffs (like Meta and Salesforce) are now rehiring.
This makes me wonder if these companies do anticipate more hiring in the months ahead!
Childcare Disruptions? I’ve got tips!
Last week, I spoke with The Skimm on the topic of navigating childcare disruptions. You can read the extended interview with tips for how to discuss childcare challenges with your employer, and how to find a parent-friendly workplace here.
Employee Retention
If you’re interested in the topic of employee retention, and how it intersects with recruiting, check out this panel interview I did last week!
Speaking of retention, did anyone else catch this article on people leaving their roles shortly after a promotion? My take on the topic here.
A couple of key reminders:
-If you have to fully perform a job before your employer gives you the compensation aligned with that role, then you’re leaving money on the table.
-Looking for jobs shortly after you’re promoted is a great strategy for maximizing your compensation.
That doesn’t mean I think you should look for a new job every time you’re promoted. But it DOES mean that if a promotion process leaves you feeling unvalued, there may be other opportunities out there for you!

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
My last position was a contract role. I had a child and therefore had to leave that job because contract positions don't have any parental leave benefits. I've been on the job hunt for several months, so it's been over a year now since my last position. How do I explain this break between jobs as I interview for new roles without revealing too much about my family circumstances?
I seriously hate that we don’t feel comfortable being honest, but I do think it’s best to disclose as little as possible.
You can minimize the appearance of career breaks on your resume in a few ways:
You can list years without months.
You can use “consulting” (for example, Dilber Consulting) as a job where the gap is. You can then list any side projects, part-time work, etc. that you worked on during that time. This is what I did when I took a break for nearly a year. (I did actually do contract work during this time - I just chose not to work full time, and bundling it under a consulting company was more organized than listing a bunch of short engagements with different employers.
You can also list “career break” without going into specifics, and if asked, be ready to share what you worked on during that time.
In interviews, I suggest keeping it brief and positive. You can say something like:
“After working nonstop for the last 8 years, I’m fortunate that I had the opportunity to step away to travel, spend time with family, and complete a few courses. I’m now refreshed and ready for my next challenge!”
