Got questions about hiring globally?
The best person for your next role might not live near your office — or even in the same country.
And more companies are realizing they don’t need to open entities everywhere just to hire great talent globally.
Instead, teams are using EOR to hire internationally faster, stay compliant, and avoid the operational headache of setting up local infrastructure before they’re ready.
That shift is changing how companies think about growth, hiring, and expansion altogether.
Oyster’s EOR helps companies hire, pay, and support employees in 180+ countries while Oyster handles payroll, compliance, taxes, and local employment requirements.

Resource Roundup!
Good read from Time Magazine around how people are struggling to maintain critical thinking skills due to their AI use - I think it’s SO important that people actively guard against this!
I shared some thoughts on cover letters (and why they’re losing relevance) with Business Insider here.
And I spoke with Fast Company around what’s happening behind the scenes with AI in hiring.
One of my former colleagues at Zapier recently announced their new role, and she shared that she sent over a short video to intro herself to the hiring…I know some folks feel like these steps are “too much” but this is how top candidates are differentiating themselves so I wanted to share!
These are examples of fake jobs on LinkedIn - if you see these, report (and don’t fall for this!)
And Zapier is running a contest for cool AI builds from people in sales!! There’s a grand prize of $20k - if you’ve been doing interesting things with AI, submit!!
My network is hiring!
Happy to help with intros!
Candidate.fyi is a really cool product and they’re hiring a BDR!
Ashby is an awesome ATS company and hiring remote recruiters!
Robinhood is looking for a sourcer to help hire for executive roles.
I spent years in OKC and there are some cool things happening in non-profits across Oklahoma. Check out this CTO opportunity.
Tons of people/HR roles at Chime!!
Several recruiter roles for folks in SF and DC.
Service Titan is hiring multiple SDRs!
Remote Sr. Media Buyer role!
Job Openings Exceed Expectations!!
Surprisingly, job openings are EXCEEDING expectations significantly, reaching a 2-year high! Does this mean the job market is turning around?
Couple of things I’ll highlight here:
Openings aren’t hires; hiring actually remains unusually low. That said, this could be an indicator that more hiring is on the horizon since a “hire” requires someone to start a new role, and increased postings in April suggest we’d see those hires show up in May/June.
Layoffs remain low. Even though they make headlines, they are actually below what we’ve seen for the better part of the last 26 years. (I thought the charts included in this post brought that to life.
That said, today, ADP shared some data that private payrolls hit their highest since January 2025 today!
Anecdotally, I can tell you that the job market feels hotter than it’s been in a while. I am personally getting weekly outreach about good opportunities…this comes after several years where I was lucky to get reached out to once every 2-3 months. Many of the companies I hear from are also hiring their first head of talent to drive growth - this suggests to me that lots of startups anticipate more aggressive hiring in the months ahead! I can also say that the candidates we’re interviewing often have a lot of opportunities available to them - people regularly withdraw to accept another offer or note that they are at late stages with other companies.
It’ll be interesting to see more of the day that comes out in the months ahead, but I’m cautiously optimistic!
The best HR advice comes from those in the trenches. That’s what this is: real-world HR insights delivered in a newsletter from Hebba Youssef, a Chief People Officer who’s been there. Practical, real strategies with a dash of humor. Because HR shouldn’t be thankless—and you shouldn’t be alone in it.
🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
Each week, I’ll answer one (or more!) of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here. |
If someone is on a career break (ex-pat trailing spouse for a few years outside the US), how do you recommend they make the most of their time to be ready to go back to work when they return (most recently an HRBP at a Fortune 50 company).
Couple of thoughts here:
First, the challenges: HR moves fast, and AI has blown up how many functions operate so a few years out of the game can be seen as a real deficit. Beyond that, HR has been heavily impacted by layoffs which means there’s a lot more competition.
Now the good: you’re planning ahead which gives you time to position yourself effectively here, and to invest in learning.
What I’d be doing:
Develop yourself heavily in AI. Learn the tools, build mock systems, take courses or read up on ethical considerations and enablement in the world of AI. This will give you an edge over folks who haven’t had that exposure.
See if you can take on some fractional work. This might mean some short-term projects, you could even volunteer your time. That way, you can speak to real challenges and experiences over the last few years and the gap won’t feel so big.
The international exposure may also be a competitive advantage - language, cultural exposure, etc. I would lean into that (and maybe target companies in your current country that have a US presence, companies expanding into the market you’re currently in, etc.
You might also share insights on LinkedIn that showcase your experience and alleviate concerns around you being out of touch with current practices.
