Is AI Taking Our Jobs?

It’s interesting because many companies are citing AI as the driving force behind their layoffs - yet it’s unclear how AI is being utilized to actually take on the work.

A couple of perspectives:

  • In many cases, this is about companies allocating resources towards AI development, buying more chips, building data centers, etc. So yes, AI is a factor in the decision to cut expenses in one part of the business, but it’s about building AI vs AI being in a place where it’s taking on the work today. You can see Nate talking about this in this video.

  • This BBC article notes that the patterns of hiring and firing aren’t drastically different from what we’d expect in response to the economy regardless of AI’s role.

Obviously, I have no way of knowing anymore than y’all do, but I try not be alarmist and remain hopeful that while these periods of change are tough, we’ll ultimately move towards creating new and interesting jobs in other areas in the years ahead.

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋

Each week, I’ll answer one (or more!) of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.

I've had this happen multiple times. I reach the final interview and don't get the offer. But I'm given positive, enthusiastic feedback. The recruiter and hiring manager both tell me to apply for future roles and to reach out directly. When I do exactly that a month later for an even better aligned position, I get silence. No response to email, LinkedIn, or voicemail. After three weeks, I get a generic rejection email. What typically causes this? Why wouldn't a recruiter at least acknowledge someone the hiring manager nearly hired, especially after explicitly encouraging them to reapply?

Ugh, I see this sort of thing a lot and it’s really hard to say.

It could be that they genuinely think you’re great AND have a few other folks in the mix that they think are even stronger.

They could be running things by different stakeholders, and planning to circle back afterwards.

They may not see as strong of alignment as you do.

There could be some feedback they aren’t sharing but that’s holding them back from moving forward.

The role could be under a different recruiter/hiring manager so they really don’t know.

I honestly wish I had a better answer but it’s hard to know. One thin you might do if you’re not already is reach out to the Hiring Manager directly vs only the recruiter. The HM is usually better equipped to see the alignment and is usually working on fewer roles than the recruiter so that might be a better bet for getting responses.

All that said, sadly, there just isn’t much you can do if they aren’t responding so I’d take it as a signal that they don’t see the fit and move on at that point.
