The HOTTEST Jobs of 2024 for Career Changers!

Pivoting to the RIGHT fields!

One of the challenges I see for career changers is that folks are often targeting jobs or industries that aren’t doing much hiring!

Today, LinkedIn published this list of the 25 highest growth jobs - based on data from 2019-2023. It outlines the industries and locations hiring for those roles, what fields people are pivoting from, etc.

Why is this so important?

Well, when you’re making a career change, you’re not going to be as competitive as someone who is already doing that work. But for jobs that are growing quickly, there aren’t going to be as many people doing that work which means companies will be more likely to consider someone moving from another field who brings transferable skills!

I do want to highlight two positions on this list that I don’t suggest pursuing in 2024 (although I think they are actually exceptions that prove that this is a pretty strong list!)

  1. You’ll find VPs of DEI listed: Now back in 2020, amidst the Black Lives Matter movement, companies wanted to demonstrate a commitment to DEI and many hired senior leaders. Sadly, those commitments quickly waned as many companies have scaled back those teams AND even laid off many of these folks.

  2. You’ll see recruiters listed: Y’all back in 2021-22, EVERYONE was hiring recruiters aggressively, especially in tech. I know people who doubled their salaries in a year by job hopping from one contract to another. Folks were moving into recruiting from completely unrelated fields and landing jobs at top tech companies. And then in 2023, ALL of those people found themselves affected by layoffs. Recruiter hiring is VERY low in 2024.

While these positions are exceptions, because the list covers 2019-2023, I’m not surprised to see them included. But I don’t think I would pursue these areas in 2024. But the other fields? Check them out - there might just be one that’s the right focus area for you!!

And even if they aren’t, use this same approach in your search. Check the jobs reports and try to get a sense of what fields and industries are hiring and which areas people are struggling to find jobs in -and consider this when planning to make a career pivot or investing in skill building.

I’ve been in sales for 7 years and I was thinking of applying to a remote

Administrative Assistant position. Should I switch up some of the information on my resume to reflect my skills that would fit that role?

Yes, I would try to focus my resume as much as possible on the administrative experience and skills you built. I’d also try to target admin roles in sales orgs - they might appreciate your experience in sales since that gives you a stronger understanding of their work!

You might also consider writing a line or two at the top of your resume explaining this move (“After 7 years in sale, I’ve realized my favorite parts of the job involve project planning, tracking and analyzing data, and stakeholder management which has led me to make a shift into administrative support roles.”)

Answering why you left a job when manager had it out for you and found every little mistake and eventually termed for performance. Felt like I was singled out since company had moved to new payroll/HRIS system. No training and others had made mistakes.

None of this needs to be brought up! If asked why you left, simply share that it wasn’t a good fit, and then focus on what you’re looking for in your next role. For example, “the job wasn’t the best fit as I really enjoy working more collaboratively, and we were pretty siloed. So I left to focus on finding a role where I can work more cross-functionally.”
