In the News
According to leaders at Anthropic, AI could replace half of all entry-level white-collar jobs in the next 5 years. Of course hopefully we’ll see the kinds of work entry level talent takes on evolve, and one of the best things we can do is to continually upskill in the AI space to keep our skills current and relevant.
Curious about the implications of those Medicaid work requirements? Here’s a read with a few of them! The headline seems to be more expenses, more administrative work, more opportunities for mistakes with little impact.

Hi Bonnie! I've worked as an editor and content strategist in traditional media (lifestyle websites, newspapers, magazines) for over a decade, and want to make the switch to content marketing or strategy for a B2B company. Despite never working in a formal marketing role, I have a lot of the skills required - experience working with freelancers, building content strategies, writing for a variety of formats, interviewing SMEs, analytics knowledge. The issue I'm running into is that the vast majority of these job listings stress previous B2B experience or working on a marketing team. I know it's rough out there and I'm competing with seasoned marketing pros, but how can I stand out and communicate that I have what it takes — even if I haven't worked for that exact department or audience?
This is always a tricky position to be in because you could totally do the work AND you’re up against people who have the skills AND experience.
A couple of things I’d consider:
Consider internal moves - try to get a job as a writer at a company you’d like to work in marketing for, and then transition into the content marketing side of things. That way you’ve got the company knowledge and they know your work. I recognize that can feel like a longer path but given that you’ve never worked in a B2B company, they may be hesitant to give you a shot so first getting to know the company/B2B space via a type of work you have experience in is probably your best shot.
Look for opportunities with content agencies that serve B2B clients so you can gain some B2B experience. You could also look for freelance work in the B2B space. This can help build up your experience and portfolio.
Translate your experience, positioning yourself as a strategist vs a writer or editor. Focus on the marketing skills (DEL, content calendars, audience segmentation, performance analytics, etc.) AI can help here!
Try to align your experience to B2B outcomes - building trust with SMEs to create thought leadership content, adapting content to different buyer stages or formats, using performance metrics to guide future content decisions and optimize marketing ROI, etc. (of course make sure that you’re accurately communicating your skills and experience!)
Create a portfolio showcasing your B2B work - explainer pieces, email marketing experience, feature deep dives, etc.
You can also leverage a cover letter or an intro deck/video to highlight your background and how it translates to the shift you’re trying to make. This kind of stuff can help someone stand out and show initiative which might help compel a hiring manager to give you a shot!
