All Eyes on Rafah
Like many of you, I feel helpless watching the atrocities unfolding in Rafah.
My son often gets upset if I leave for a few hours. When I go to take a shower, he asks me to "come back and snuggle." And there are thousands of children crying for parents that will never come home.
My child gets upset when he doesn't get to eat what he wants; he's never experienced hunger. I cannot imagine as a parent being unable to feed my child when he's hungry.
My child covers his ears at the indoor pool because it's so loud, and has cried when hearing fireworks. I cannot imagine as a parent trying to comfort a child for months on end with explosions in the backdrop.
I cannot imagine being uprooted from my home, leaving everything behind, living in tents, being weak from hunger while relocated over and over again trying to keep my child safe only to lose him anyway.
I cannot wrap my head around how we are doing this to human beings in 2024.
I don't really know what to do about it, but I know the tools we have at our disposal are:
Donating to humanitarian aid organizations.
Donating directly to families.
Advocating loudly to our representatives.
Please donate to one of the Go Fund Me's shared by Operation Olive Branch, or one of the following aid organizations: Doctor's Without Borders, World Central Kitchen, or Save the Children.
Finally, I encourage everyone to contact their representatives. Find yours here.
As a thank you, I am offering resume or LinkedIn profile feedback, or email responses to your questions. You can submit proof of donations here. Shout out to Tejal Rives for the inspiration here - she is offering resume reviews in exchange for donations!
🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.
I have a disability that requires accommodations. Should I disclose this in the interview process? This is asked on applications but I worry about being discriminated against.
If this is asked as an EEOC question, those are typically not visible or tied to the individual so I wouldn’t worry about it, but you’re also under no obligation to disclose.
Personally, if you need accommodations in the interview process, I would bring this up to the recruiter. Otherwise, I would wait until I had an offer, and then discuss with HR.
Companies are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of ability, and they are legally required to provide reasonable accommodations unless they pose undue hardship. but it’s very hard to prove discrimination and I would not risk it unless I was worried it would fall into the category of “undue hardship”.
Once you have an offer in hand, then you can talk with HR to outline the necessary accommodations and determine how they can be met. At that stage, it’s much easier to prove that a company is discriminating if the offer is revoked after the request.
