Sharing HR for Good!

Y’all, for the last 2.5 years, I’ve been creating content that’s mostly focused on finding jobs, and my more general thoughts on recruiting and workplace culture.

And I finally decided to launch a second newsletter - this one, focused on those work work in HR-related fields (like recruiting, total rewards, learning and development, etc.)

This is the first place I’m sharing this, and if you’re interested in getting the first issue (going out next week!), I encourage you to subscribe!

This newsletter is going to be a bit different in that my plan is to curate awesome insights from those who are working across HR functions rather than focusing purely on Talent Acquisition. My goal is to amplify the great stuff others are doing, and give folks a chance to get insights from experts.

Once you subscribe, you’ll get a “Welcome Email” that will share more about how you can share your insights (or challenges you want insights on from professionals in the people space)!

HR for GoodHR has a bad reputation...let's change that together.

🤔 What is going on here?! 🤔

It’s a bit wild to kick off your vacation with a mass shooting at a rally for a Presidential candidate, and end it with an unprecedented exit from the race by another Presidential candidate.

Politics in the US have always been a wild ride, but things really feel like they are spiraling out of control at times.

I’d imagine I’m not alone in finding it a bit challenging to focus amidst all this craziness.

So this week, I thought I’d share a bit about what I’m doing to try to stay focused.

  1. I am committing to limiting my consumption of social media and news during the work day other than on my lunch break. This is really hard for me as I read various news outlets multiple times a day, and watch the news before and after work. But I’m going to do my best during my work day because this kind of news can impact my focus and emotions in the work day so I’m going to try to hold some boundaries.

  2. As a teacher, I leveraged movement as a way to help my students focus, and this works for adults too! I’ve been using my standing desk and wobble board a lot more (I have a pricey one from Fluidstance (this is an affiliate link that I believe has a discount attached), and here’s a similar but more reasonably priced option for Yes4All.

  3. Leveraging mindfulness tools like Headspace (check with your employer - you may have free access!) and taking breaks during the work day. It’s easy to work through lunch, especially when you work from home, but try to make breaks and a bit of downtime a part of your routine.

And of course, if you feel really overwhelmed by the news, it’s always OK to take a break. It’s a privilege to be able to disconnect from bad news - many are living it and can’t take a break. But your job is to take care of yourself, and if that means balancing being informed with prioritizing your mental health. Therapy is unfortunately quite expensive, you may also be helpful (and check with your employer because some may offer access to a virtual therapist or coach as part of your benefits plan.

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋

Each week, I’ll answer one (or more!) of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.

I took a personal break of 3 years. Post covid, I decided to take care of my young family, I quit my job as a Project Manager and along with caring for my family started a home Resin art business. As the kids start elementary school, I am itching to get back. Aware that its been a 3 year break, I want to step into Data Analytics. I have been taking courses and keeping my skills brushed up. Should I mention my 2 year experience as a Founder/Owner in my resume or cut it out and just say it was a personal break.

Personally, I would include your business! It will show that you’ve been working for the last few years - often those longer breaks can raise questions.

But I would focus on the most transferable skills. You do not need to offer an exhaustive list of every single thing you’ve done. I would highlight the pieces of your work that most align to the jobs you’re applying for. So if you’re transitioning to data analytics, provide examples of how you’ve done this through your business. Maybe you list how you built a pricing model based on data from several platforms - focus on these sorts of things vs less relevant skills used in your work like making products out of resin which may seem less relevant.
