Be Different!
In a competitive market, you need to stand out.
Live Q&A!
Next week, I’ll be doing a Q&A on Fishbowl on Thursday alongside Adam Posner, 11/16 at 12:30 PST! Join us here!
Always set a Google alert for your name…I just caught this video I shared last week in Upworthy!
Some Awesome Resources from this Week!
James Hudson wrote an article for Forbes that is full of some of the best tips for LinkedIn, backed by data. I’ve shared a lot of these suggestions before, but love seeing so much rich content in one article. Bookmark this (and yes, he confirms, with data, that the Open to Work banner results in more outreach from recruiters!)
Ashleigh Bergh Duggan had some great lessons learned for your first 90 days on the job. I know a lot of you will be starting new jobs soon so figured this would be helpful! 🙂
The folks at Still Hiring say that we’re seeing some upticks in posted roles! You can use this tool to find out who is actually hiring, a little bit about them, and access their job board!
Get Noticed!
In a crowded market, recruiters typically have more strong candidates in their applicant pool than they do spots for interviews. They have to prioritize.
So how do you maximize your chances of making the cut?
Often, it can come down to standing out from the crowd so they go look up your application instead of just reviewing you alongside the hundreds of other applications.
Some ideas to make this happen:
Openly searching? Drop a comment on recruiters, department leaders, or even the company’s recent posts letting them know you just applied and can’t wait to hear back.
An even bolder move? Post about your enthusiasm for company X. Talk about your enthusiasm around applying for the role and why it’s a perfect fit, and tag the company! (I’d reserve this for your dream company when you are SUPER well qualified for the role as it’s not a move you can make regularly, but I’ve seen a few folks get a TON of support.)
Send a message to those same people, or the general recruiting page offering a bit more insight into your experience. For example, you can add in a work sample, your portfolio, etc. Side note: a
Request an intro from a mutual connection - you can find 1st or 2nd connections to the company on the people tab of their page on LinkedIn. Ask those folks if they know the hiring team and would be open to making an introduction - they may even offer a referral!
Sites like Fishbowl and Blind allow you to connect with folks anonymously, but can help you with making connections that could offer referrals or introductions as well.
Again there are never guarantees - you can be AWESOME and still miss out on an interview. But hopefully these tips help!

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.
I’m not good at small talk and get so nervous when I get into an interview. Do you have any tips to help me succeed in interviews?
Yes! I’m not great at small talk either…don’t feel too pressured.
You can generally expect that they’ll ask things like:
“How’s your day going?”
“Do you have any interesting plans for the weekend?”
“Tell me about yourself”
So prepare responses to those basic questions so you won’t feel flustered. You can try to toss in a fun fact about yourself, and bait them with something to ask about. For example, “my day has been great, took a long walk with my dog and also spent some time preparing for this interview by checking out your website - I loved the blog post on your approach to structuring team meetings, has that made a big difference in you productivity?”
This gives them something specific to respond to AND shows that you went above and beyond preparing for the interview. Plus now they might ask about dog or something like that.
And if you ever feel awkward, you can always say “I’m a bit nervous so sorry if I’m not being the best conversationalist but I’m really excited for this interview.”
In addition, you can generally predict most of the interview questions. Be ready to share your goals, responsibilities, and what you accomplished in each of your last few roles.
Be ready to highlight a couple of big successes, and an area you struggled.
You can often expect to talk about how you’ve navigated conflict, offered feedback to peers/direct reports, managed a project, closed a deal, etc. (of course depending on your line of work).
So prepare your stories and examples in advance - that way, you can practice and hopefully keep the nerves at bay!
