Your December Game Plan
Plus three must-have resources!!
đź‘€Three Must-Readsđź‘€
This post (and the accompanying article) from Valen Correa about their job search - they include awesome data points AND share a list of remote companies they targeted for their search.
Haley O’Neill is a recruiter who regularly puts out lists of work in Talent Acquisition and People Ops/HR. If you’re looking for roles in this space, this might help cut out some of the workload for you.
And Joanne Mok shared this great list of 100% remote companies - lots that wouldn’t have come to mind for me! And check the comments as recruiters and hiring managers chimed in as well.
And as 2023 comes to a close…
Next week will be our final issue of the year! And I want to fill it up with “gifts” for you. Got a resources you want me to share or a question you want me to respond to? You can share your requests here and I’ll do my best to help!
🏝Steps your can take as we head into break!🏝
Companies aren’t going to be doing much hiring over the next 2 weeks, and I don’t think many will be posting jobs. So this is a great time to take a break.
But there ARE some unique end-of-year moves you can make to support your search.
Here are a few tips:
Networking: You can send end-of-year wrap ups to your community (I walk through this idea, and share three templates here.)
Update your achievements: Whether you’re job searching or not, take time to make notes around big achievements from the year. Maybe you built a new skills, exceeded annual targets, got an awesome shoutout from a colleague - got those down so you can update your resume or incorporate those into your interview prep, promotion conversations, or end of year review.
Fully disconnect: This is tough, especially if you’ve been out of work a while. But job searching is a full time job, and you need a break too. You may find yourself spinning your wheels anyway since companies won’t be checking applications and responding to messages. So take this time to focus on family of pursue a passion project.
Fun fact: Last December over my winter break I registered a domain and said yes to my first brand deal that kicked off in January…small steps that helped unlocked a new path to income. So if you ARE going to “work”, consider focusing in on something exciting and new instead.
🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.
Can companies use language in the privacy policy of a job application to request permission to run a soft credit check on candidates? If so, how should candidates struggling with credit card debt handle this so they aren't denied interviews due to their credit history?
This was a new question for me! I have heard of a few instances of credit checks being part of the hiring process - often when the role might be one that could have access to private information that could make it easier to commit fraud, embezzlement, etc. But those are modified - they wouldn’t have access to information like your credit score.
Companies do need your explicit permission and I am not aware of this happening at the applicant stage, but rather at the offer stage alongside background checks. So you would be aware and consent to this.
Companies are also required to inform you when your credit check contributed to a hiring decision so this could make you aware if there is an issue holding you back
Given how rare this is, I don’t think it’s something most jobseekers need to worry about. They shouldn’t have access to things like credit card debt, so personally, I wouldn’t bring it up.
The In-Flight Amenities 🍱
Each week, I share job openings within my network and jobseekers that I hope we can all support in their job search.
