November Nudge!
Today, I celebrated my 2 year anniversary at work. In fact, my last 2 jobs started in November as well!
In fact - I think November is a great time to apply for jobs and here’s why.
(side note: I talked about this topic here if you prefer video!)
From the hiring manager perspective:
Given the holidays and vacation time many people take at the end of the year, hiring managers generally would prefer not to hire this time of year. So if they post it, they really want/need to hire for it.
Depending on how the budget works, some companies start fresh in the new year, and in some work places, a hiring manager may want to close out a role and get someone in before the budget turns over.
From the candidate perspective:
For employed jobseekers, it often does not make sense to leave at the end of the year. They want to be paid out for their end of year holidays/planned time off, and often there are bonuses that pay out for those who close out the year that pay out in January.
And often, due to planned travel, jobseekers also don’t want to deal with interviewing at the end of the year.
Put these things together and you’ve got hiring managers that want to move quickly, and a small applicant pool.
So while you may not see a huge number of new roles posted in the next month, you will often see that companies want to move quickly to fill those they DO post.
Are you planning to apply for jobs this November?! |

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋

This is more for my wife, but she was recently laid off from Wells Fargo after 23 years with them. She’s concerned about ageism as well as her skill set (Business Systems Consultant) . Her resume shows her tenure at wells and breaks down each position there. Any ideas to avoid the ageism? And any job hunting tips for her?
Part of me wants to say don’t worry about it, you don’t want to work in a workplace where that discriminates based on age.
That said, I know that this is a real concern. Most recruiting professionals say that anything beyond the last 10 years is unnecessary and no longer super relevant so I think it’s fine to remove things from earlier in your career UNLESS they are uniquely well-aligned to the roles you’re looking for.
Here’s an example of that:
Candidate A 2020-2023 - Sr. Accounting Manager 2017-2020 - Accounting Manager 2016-2017 - Sr. Accountant 2007-2017 - Accountant II 2000-2007 - Accountant I | Candidate B 2021 - 2023 - Business Development Manager 2019-2021 - Business Development Representative 2013-2019 - Office Manager 2007-2013 - Sr. Accountant 2000-2007 - Accountant I/II |
Now let’s say both of these candidates are considering Accounting roles.
Candidate A could probably leave off some of those earlier roles - it’s obvious that they had some other experiences in order to get to the Sr. Accountant role, but it doesn’t really matter to a hiring team.
Candidate B on the other hand will want to include that earlier experience because the last 10 years of their career seems quite misaligned to what they are targeting. Showing relevant experience will outweigh any concerns around ageism in my opinion. Candidate B might also consider a functional resume.
There are some other things you can do to hide age:
Remove any years from degrees
Add a section called “earlier career experience” without listing years, and list things that are less relevant but still worth noting. I actually have this on mine because pre-2014, my experience is education/program management/instructional leadership - not relevant to recruiting or tech - but still some notable accomplishments in there.
As noted above, a functional or combination style resume might better allow you to bring forward your most relevant experience without putting such emphasis on when that experience was gained or your total work experience.
