Check out Google's innovative new interview tool!

Plus a summary of YOUR feedback on job search tools!

Three Hopefully Helpful Resources!

  1. Google just launched a new tool called “Interview Warmup”. This is totally free and provides sample interview questions based on your career field, allows you to record a response, and offers feedback. I share a quick overview here. I think the questions are really strong examples to practice with, and really like some of the recommended language they offer at the end which can be helpful for interviews AND resumes!

  2. One big pain point for many jobseekers is understanding compensation (sadly). I shared some thoughts for this BBC article, and hopefully these insights will be helpful!

  3. A skill worth highlighting in interviews AND that I think serves folks incredibly well in the workplace is “managing up”. Managing up means showing initiative, being proactive with your communication, and advocating for yourself. And I often see a theme where really successful employees do this well.
You can read more about this topic here and here are thoughts specifically from startup leaders.
I shared a video overview here if you prefer that approach!
If you’re interviewing, consider how you can demonstrate that you’re good at this when responding to interview questions (for example, share the strategies you use to align with senior leaders).

📣Here’s your feedback!📣

Over the last 2 weeks, I’ve collected feedback from you all

I wanted to summarize YOUR feedback over the past 2 weeks around recommended services.
Your favorite AI resume service: Teal! (70% said they would definitely recommend it, and 100% said YES or SOMEWHAT recommend).
What you liked: The application tracker, and several folks noted trying several AI tools and liking this the most. Folks also appreciated that nearly every feature is available for free.
What you’d change: One person noted that it may be more useful for career changers who aren’t sure which keywords to use, and you wouldn’t mind a few more options for customizing the resume.

Your least favorite service: Interestingly, every single resume writer that folks used received a “No” recommendation. 100%.
I’ve tested out several services, and my general take on them is that any service under $400 will only get your resume 80% of the way there. You can expect a strong format, that it’s well-written, and that it serves as somewhat of an exemplar for a strong resume, but there will always be things that you have to improve with them unless you’re meeting with the writer multiple times.
I have yet to find any US-based services that are under $300, and that often means that there may be some language that’s in British English or that sort of thing. That said, I have had people who paid $1k+ for a resume from a top resume writer with hundreds of thousands to 1M+ followers and STILL be really disappointed in the outcome.
So my takeaway here is that you’re generally going to be better off using a resume template or AI tool and doing the work yourself, OR using a cheaper resume writer knowing you’ll need to take some steps to get it to the finish line.

Tips/Services I’d Never Thought Of: Some folks shared suggestions of steps they’d taken that I’d never seen before.
-One person shared that they set up Google Alerts for their industry - this can help flag new opportunities or get you articles that will help you develop in your career field.
-One person noted Working Wardrobes - this is an LA-based org that provides clothing for interviews, and other services (Dress for Success is another one to check out).
-Multiple people noted benefiting from local networking groups - Facebook and LinkedIn may be helpful for identifying options!
-Folks shared Hunter.io and Cultivated Careers as places to find hiring manager email addresses

And finally, I promised that 2 people would win gift cards for their contributions. Karey K (2nd time winning one of my contests!!) and Joshua K - shoot me an email with the name of the store that you’d like your gift card to come from!!

Teal is one of my favorite products for jobseekers!
Teal offers a full suite of tools for jobseekers from their job tracker to AI-powered resumes to their newest feature, which auto-fills job applications for you!!
They share amazing insights into recruiting, using LinkedIn, how ATSs work, and more on their LinkedIn and TikTok, and their website even has free courses to help you navigate searching for jobs, interviewing and more.
Many of their features are completely free, and I think this is a tool every jobseeker should have in their toolkit. Sign up here!

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋

Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.

The edtech and training market feels saturated with teachers and educators trying to leave the field for the private sector. Every professional learning/client service/training job has over 200 applications on LinkedIn. Do you have any tips to stand out?

As someone who made a similar transition years ago, I know it’s tough to make these moves.

I’ve noticed a lot of folks leaving school based roles want to leap into corporate or tech, but you may have more luck considering jobs with your local district or non-profits. Your background in education will be a huge advantage for these types of positions and you may be able to build some new skills that can help you move outside of education as an industry.

And then I’d suggest all the stuff I’ve recommended before: try to stand out by sharing some additional materials or an intro email/DM to the hiring manager/recruiter, get referrals, etc. Often it’s just a game of who gets seen the quickest and these steps can help.

You might also check out Josh’s Job Blast - it’s by a former colleague and he compiles lots of non-classroom roles in his newsletter/LinkedIn. Here’s an example.

Currently unemployed and interviewing for most positions in my field. Received an offer late in the year for a position I’m not very excited about. Reject it with hopes that hiring picks back up in 2024 and that a job I am excited about will come up, or accept it so that I have something with the goal to make another move in a year from now?

Congrats on the offer!

Personally, I would take it but keep interviewing. The market is so tough that there’s no guarantees. Maybe you’ll start and it’ll be better than expected, and you’ll want to stay!

But at least it gives you some buffer to only interview for jobs you’re really excited about, and to gain some extra experience you can add to your resume.
