Resources of the Week!
There are lots of AI-powered tools out there, but you can also setup ChatGPT to help you customize your resume, prepare for interviews, and more. Here’s a guide walking you through prompts to do this (I shared this a few months ago, but wanted to resurface as we have lots of new followers, and I made a few updates!)
Speaking of AI, recruiters (including me!) weigh in on the whole “AI tools in hiring” debate!
And for folks looking for remote work at SaaS companies, Zapier continues to post some awesome roles - for my sales folks, we just posted an AE role! 🙌

Real Talk on Auto-Appliers
Y’all, I have looked at about 500 applications in the last week.
And you’d be shocked at how many responses are identical - they start off with the exact same line, and are sometimes entirely identical.
They aren’t wrong. But they also aren’t good.
People are either using chatGPT and copy/pasting, or they are using an auto-applier.
Now here’s the thing: my company doesn’t automatically reject for this. We love AI! We use AI all the time.
But, when your application is identical to 100 others, how do you stand out?
When your writing sounds robotic and sterile and lacks specificity or character, how do you stand out from those who provide well-written responses?
So a lot of these candidates get rejected - not for using AI tools, but for using AI tools poorly to produce a weaker result than a human could produce on their own.
And some people are REALLY not getting their money’s worth with those tools. Are you using Ladders? If so, please know that it won’t respond to anything open-ended - you simply get line that says something along the lines of, “I’m using Ladders to apply, email me with any questions.”
And in these cases, a candidate with a great resume gets rejected because they didn’t actually complete the application.
Bottom Line: I would not use these AI powered tools right now. I do not see them helping most people land a job - especially not a good one. There are some services that offer a human assistant who can submit applications and connect with you as needed to strengthen your application. That may be worth a try if you trust another human to apply for you.
But I worry that what might happen is that you spin your wheels submitting a high volume of weak applications that leave you feeling more discouraged than when you started when that time might be better spent putting out 10 really great applications.

🙋Answering Your Questions🙋
Each week, I’ll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.
Is it okay not to share that I've been laid off with a recruiter or hiring manager? My former employer said it is okay to say that I am still working there. I haven't shared this and I am currently speaking to multiple companies but now I am getting nervous that this was a mistake.
Interesting question!
If they are going to back that up, then I guess there’s no harm in saying that you still work there, though it will likely show up on a background check. Additionally, some companies may be excited to have some available quickly.
You might frame this as, “I’m being affected by a reduction-in-force and wrapping up things with my current workplace, but am ready to start a new position ASAP.”
This can help convey a positive relationship with your current employer without sending the message that you’re employed.
That said, I’d personally be honest that I was no longer there to minimize any risk or confusion.
