What to do when you hate your job
I know most readers of this newsletter are employed, but many are looking for new opportunities or for ways to level up.
I shared a post earlier this week with some ideas of things to do if you’re miserable at work BEFORE you quit your job!
The truth is that we spend the majority of our waking hours working, and for many of us, our jobs are a significant part of our identities. Many of us enjoy our work, take pride in it, and want to do fulfilling work vs simply collect a paycheck.
And that means it’s worth consistently nurturing our careers and positioning ourselves to be able to make moves easily. So if you’re waiting for the shoe to drop before taking action, consider taking 1-2 of the steps on this list this month!

Early insights into the jobs report that will becoming out on Friday suggest that we’ll see minimal job creation reported. Most of the articles linked here are paywalled, but you can see the BLS report for yourself.
I know most of my readers align with me politically; the NYT had this opinion piece (gift link) and I think it’s an interesting read - not because I agree with this take, but because I think it’s helpful to see how others might view (or spin) the current actions being taken by the administration and what comes next.

I’ve been passed over for promotion twice now. Would you recommend taking this to HR or is it just time to leave?
I think how you respond depends on a few things:
How is your performance? Are you consistently exceeding expectations?
What’s the promotion culture? Are others in roles like yours getting promoted?
What feedback have you gotten around what it would take to get promoted?
Is there a business case for your promotion?
In my experience, companies typically only promote someone when there’s a business need, and they are performing extremely well and essentially operating at the next level already. In this market, I think the bar is even higher.
If you’re getting passed over while someone with similar or weaker performance is getting promoted, and your manager doesn’t have any clear feedback or communicate investment in promoting you, then I’d probably put myself on cruise control at work and focus my energy on a job search.
If your manager does offer feedback and you think it’s fair, I’d work on those areas and double down on seeking feedback so you can show growth in these areas.
But if no one else is getting promoted either, then honestly, that’s just where the company is. I wouldn’t take it personally.
The truth is that most workplaces have slowed down hiring, raised expectations, and are selective about promotions so I think this is just where the workplace is.
