It's 2024!
Here's what's happening in the market on day 3 of the new year!
š„³ Happy New Year! š„³
Welcome to 2024!
Letās start off the new year with some good news! Brittany Sanfilippo landed a new job in talent acquisition just a few months after being laid off! She shares some tips in this post.
Hereās three important things to know about the market right now.
The new JOLTS report is out. It shows a bunch of lows - job openings (down to 8.8M), quits (down to 3.5M), and hiring (down to 5.3M). The only bright spot? Layoffs are at a historic low! Read more here.
More jobs are being posted. Iāve been tracking LinkedIn job postings. At the end of December. Today, we have 5.35M jobs posted, and of those, just 231k are remote. The total jobs posted is creeping up from 5.21M at the end of December, but remote jobs are actually down from 259k. Yesterday, I saw that over 400k jobs had been posted in the last 24 hours alone, and today that number is 340k. At the same time, weāre seeing jobs come down quickly as well. Key takeaways: set up those job alerts, and try to be an early applicant!
Remote jobs are on the declineā¦but there may be a hack for that! Less than 5% of posted jobs are remote, at least on LinkedIn. But companies DO seem open to making exceptions. This was noted in LinkedInās 34 Big Ideas for 2024. For niche roles or high performers, companies may be more willing to consider remote. So this could be a conversation to have in an upcoming performance review, or if youāre fielding multiple offers. You can check out the 34 Big Ideas here.
A cool personal update!
Iām going to be a regular contributor to Business Insider! Iāve always loved writing, and am excited to be able to share career and job market insights on another platform - and to get paid for it!! You can check out my first article here. (Actually it was my secondā¦the first was on Quiet Firing.
(I had no idea the picture would be so large but shout out to Secta AI because Iāve still never done professional headshots and my own family didnāt realize this wasnāt me. š¤£)
And an askā¦
Has my content been useful to you over the last few years? One of these days, I am going to get around to building a website, and would love to have some testimonials. I created a quick form to collect input (and I used Visme which I am currently OBSESSED with to do thisā¦so even if you donāt complete the form, enjoy the fun animation. š)

šAnswering Your Questionsš
Each week, Iāll answer a few of your questions in this section. You can submit your questions here.
I'm in Florida, but I've decided it's time to move back to my roots in NY. The problem is getting employers in NY to take me seriously, even though it's indicated on my resume that I'm moving. I don't expect them to pay for moving costs; I can do that. Please provide any sort of guidance that you can.
Great question, and I know many folks who have struggled with this same thing! Hereās my suggestion: list the metro area you plan to move to. You can even put in parentheses something like āNew York City (relocating Feb. 2024)ā though I think itās fine to simply list the metro youāll be working from. If they ask for your location, put the location you plan to work from. Once you get into an interview, you can explain that youāre currently in Florida, but planning to relocate and do not need assistance. But that way, you wonāt be removed from consideration due to location. You can even update your LinkedIn to minimize confusion.
I'm an elementary teacher looking to transition out of the classroom. How do I quantify my achievements as I build my resume? Do you have any education-specific examples?
Thereās lots of classroom work that can translate to other fields! I would try to use language that mimics the fields you want to go into. For example, instead of unit and lesson planning, you translated annual and quarterly strategic plans into weekly tactical plans to lead students to exceed their annual goals by 112%.
You can talk about designing and leading trainings, curriculum development, major events and initiatives that you organized, etc.
My suggestion for teachers is also to target roles in education non-profits, ed tech, and school districts as a first step. These are places where your teaching experience will be seen as a huge asset and theyāll understand your experiences so you donāt have to translate as much!
